There’s a common trait among highly successful individuals: they don’t let discomfort linger.


Whether it's a tough conversation, a difficult decision, or an unsettling situation, they confront challenges head-on. Perhaps taking a minute to think with a level head and asking advisors for wisdom but those are active steps of facing the issue at hand well rather than for the purpose of avoidance.


As your coach, confidant, and someone who has done my fair share of both avoiding and confronting, I’m here to encourage you to face what is holding you, your business, your friendships behind.


It’s time. Take that rock out of your shoe!


The Rock in Your Shoe: A Metaphor for Life’s Challenges

Imagine walking around with a small rock in your shoe. It’s uncomfortable, but you keep going, thinking it’s easier to tolerate the pain than to stop, remove your shoe, and deal with it. Eventually, the pain becomes unbearable, affecting how you walk, your mood, and your overall well-being. Successful people know that it’s better to take a moment to remove that rock, even if it’s inconvenient, rather than letting it fester and cause more significant problems down the line.


The Power of Addressing Issues Directly

Successful individuals understand the importance of addressing problems immediately rather than postponing them.


They make the hard calls, have the difficult conversations, and pivot their routines when necessary. They realize that a little discomfort now is far better than prolonged pain and frustration in the future.


The Science Behind Facing Challenges

Research in psychology has shown that avoiding problems doesn’t alleviate stress—in fact, it often exacerbates it.


According to Lazarus and Folkman’s theory of stress and coping (1984), avoidance can lead to chronic stress and anxiety, which can negatively impact your mental and physical health.


On the other hand, confronting issues directly activates the brain’s reward pathways, leading to feelings of accomplishment and relief (Poldrack, 2006).


This proactive approach not only resolves the immediate problem but also strengthens your resilience and capacity to handle future challenges.


Practical Examples of Embracing Discomfort

  • Career Moves:

    • Imagine you’re managing a project that isn’t delivering results. Instead of pushing through and hoping for the best, successful leaders reassess the situation, make the tough decision to pivot, and reallocate resources to more promising ventures. This ability to course-correct saves time, energy, and resources in the long run.

  • Relationships:

    • Avoiding difficult conversations in relationships can lead to long-term resentment and distance. Addressing issues directly, even if it’s uncomfortable, can strengthen the relationship, leading to deeper understanding and connection.

  • Personal Growth:

    • Taking risks, whether it’s starting a new business, learning a new skill, or pursuing a long-held dream, often involves facing fears and stepping out of your comfort zone. Successful people know that personal and professional growth comes from embracing these challenges, not avoiding them.


Community Challenge: Confront the Rock in Your Shoe

Reflect on an area in your life where you’ve been avoiding a tough decision or conversation. How has avoiding this issue affected you? What steps can you take to address it head-on?

  1. Identify and Reflect: Consider a situation in your life where you’ve been putting off a necessary action. What is it, and why have you been avoiding it? How has this avoidance impacted your well-being and progress?

  2. Share and Support: Engage with the community by sharing your experience. What challenges have you faced, and how have you—or others—addressed similar situations? Use this shared wisdom to find strategies that can help you move forward.

  3. Plan for Action: Based on your reflection and the community’s insights, develop a concrete plan to tackle the issue. What specific steps will you take today to address it? How will you ensure that you don’t delay action the next time a challenge arises?
