The thought of working out generally doesn’t bring us a warm fuzzy feeling. We would hope not to cringe at the thought of working out either. So, what if I told you it’s totally possible to love your fitness journey so much that you actually get excited about it?!
Allow me to introduce you to your next love interest!
To be honest, I love fitness, but also... sometimes I don’t! Working out has always been a love/hate relationship for me. Some days I’m excited about personal fitness, and then others I’m tired and I don’t want to deal with getting (or staying) in shape. Exercise is hard, and hard things aren’t fun. Working out was quite the struggle until I started learning about myself more and began to figure out what motivates me. Then, I started to change my fitness routine into one that served me and fit my lifestyle. And you can too!
So, what motivates you? Do you need to enjoy your activity in order to do it? Or are you excited by the challenge of learning a new skill? Do you need to mix it up to keep yourself interested? While you think about what drives you, I’d love to share some ways that I’ve seen others learn to love their journey.
5 Tips To Grow Your Fitness Journey:
Get Creative! Find an activity that you actually enjoy. The process of reaching your fitness goals does NOT have to be painful. Just move! If you like to dance, dance! If you like to be outside, go walking or hiking. If you get excited by new challenges, look for a more “out of the box” kind of activity. You can even try taking different classes every week if you get bored easily. There are so many ways to achieve your goals, and the best way you can help yourself get there is by finding something you actually want to do.
Smile. It’s true! When you smile while doing an activity, your brain will actually start to create positive memories and associate joy with the activity you are doing. Whether you smile while running, or laugh while lifting you’ll enjoy it more and more overtime. Don’t be afraid to have a good time. Remember, smiling is contagious. If someone sees you smiling, you just might be that sprinkle of joy they need.
Find a Buddy. Friends make everything better. And if you can’t find a workout buddy, try a group fitness class. You’ll meet new people and seeing the same faces might help you feel more comfortable. Who knows, you might even get more excited to see your friend than workout, but at least you’ll be excited to go! Friends can help lift you up and keep you in the game when you’re feeling low on energy. You can help lift them up when they need encouragement too.
Make Realistic Goals. This is actually super important to stop frustration from creeping in. If you make huge, far-out goals, you might feel like the journey is taking forever to get somewhere. When we make smaller, more specific, and attainable goals along the way, you’ll reach your goals faster and stay motivated longer as you see yourself making progress. Making a point to focus on one step at a time will stir up feelings of excitement, motivation, and pride to continue on the journey.
Celebrate Often. As you accomplish your goals, don’t forget to reward your accomplishments. Celebration is a major catalyst for motivation. So, keep yourself motivated by enjoying healthy rewards. That could be anything from buying a new workout outfit to enjoying your favorite restaurant. Don’t go too crazy, but be sure to have fun.
Time to shine! Pick one of these tips to try this week or try to come up with one of your own. There are so many more ways to learn to love your personal health journey. Thanks for letting me share some of my faves with you!
